About Rowena

Rowena’s gardens reflect her passion for all things colourful, sophisticated, artistic and local. As a Botanist and Conservationist her gardens are designed to celebrate the beautiful nature of their surrounding areas.

Whilst studying Botany at the University of Cape Town Rowena was fortunate to be taught by some of the worlds most renowned experts on the Cape Floral Kingdom. While working with botany professors and scientists, Rowena developed a deep understanding of how Fynbos plants adapt and thrive in South Africa’s harsh conditions including nutrient poor soils, hot-dry summers and fire prone areas. These experiences instilled a deep appreciation for the region’s spectacular floral diversity that continues to absorb & excite her – as  seen in her work on the ground.

After completing her Masters degree in Conservation Biology, Rowena worked for an international conservation organisation that allowed her to visit some of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Her exposure to the unique forest, mangrove, desert and marine ecosystems taught her how important nature is for humans to thrive. Her appreciation of nature and her love of colour inspires her to “paint with flowers” across the South African Landscape. Rowena is fortunate to have learned her craft and the art of great gardening alongside some of South Africa’s most inspiring garden designers, including Franchesca Watson and Dominic Touwen.

Rowena lives and works in Cape Town and has completed both public and private gardens in small and large spaces. She is a committee member of the Aderne Gardens, a public park and arboretum in Claremont, Cape Town, and an active member of the Stellenberg Garden Club.
